I have never really liked this word, beginning all the way back from my first encounter of the word in the early 80's through Steven Covey's 7 habits books. It is apparently losing its differentiation from simple actions. A company executive was recently explaining how the company has lost some credibility with investment analysts, and the company now has the obligation to proactively respond to this circumstance.
You can't have a proactive reaction. That's like having a positive negative. I'm sure there is some twisted, political-speak explanation of how there can be a response to an indicator of greater forming concern, proactively preventing the developing greater concern. Blah, blah, blah.
I wish people would just speak with meaning of words as they were intended, communicating to share information rather than to assert the great wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of the speaker.
This somewhat has the same uncomfortable feeling as someone who attempts to orchestrate their behavior so as to appear more casual.
